The main temple is situated on the top of Mount Lempuyang at the very east of Bali. There is a short walk to the first temple from the car park. From here we ascend 2500 steps to the top of Mount Lempuyang where we come past a number of shrines where we will pray for permission to enter the spiritual temple, place offerings and receive blessings.

The views as we ascend are truly divine, along the north and east coast of Bali and to the west, Mount Agung, often shrouded in amazing cloud formations.

Lempuyang temple is located on Lempuyang Mountain, Karangasem Regency, east Bali. The Balinese Hindu’s named it Sad Khayangan Agung Lempuyang Luhur, which is the place for Hyang Iswara and Hyang Agni Jaya. Puja Wali/ piodalan (sacred day) is held every six months, exactly on Umanis Galungan, Kamis (Thursday) wuku Dungulan, or the day after the Galungan ceremony.
To go to Lempuyang temple from Denpasar, it is about 80 km, a 2 hour journey to the east. Along the way, you will see beautiful scenery, rice field panoramas and rivers. There are 3 ways to go there, that is:
Kemuda/Purwayu way; passing Ngis Tista Village, Kemuda, Penataran Agung Lempuyang Luhur at Purwayu, Telaga Mas, Pasar Agung to Lempuyang Luhur.
Basangalas way; passing Ngis Tista Village, Basangalas, Banjar Gamongan, Telaga Sawang, Lempuyang Madya-Parahyangan Mpu Gni Jaya straight along towards Luhuring Lempuyang Madya, Pasar Agung and finally to Lempuyang Luhur.
Karangasem Regency way; from Bukit Village a straight-line to Jumeneng Village, Kenusut Temple, Pasar Agung and then to Lempuyang Luhur.

Be careful, because in the rainy season the pathways are very slippery and muddy. But for those of you who like adventure and love to see the mystery of nature, the journey will bring much fun and pleasure to you.
Lempuyang Temple contains a lot of mysteries from a long time ago, when Sang Hyang Pasupati recommended Hyang Gni Jaya together with Hyang Putra Jaya and Dewi Danuh to save Bali from disaster. Later, according to the villagers, as well as for praying, there are also people who come to Lempuyang Temple for other purposes, such as to recover from illnesses, avoid evil, and there are even politicians or officials who pray that their authority will be forever or to try to obtain a certain position. Usually they come in the middle of night, in order to avoid the public.
Please come to Lempuyang Temple and obey the rules on entering that sacred place, so that your safety will be guaranteed. Ask for any guidance from the Pemangku Pura (the person who is responsible for the temple) or any official so that your journey will be safe.

TELAGA WAJA - KARANGASEM

Whitewater Rafting - Telaga Waja River

The adventure starts with an air-conditioned coach pick-up from your hotel or villa. There are some versions of story telling us the history of Tenganan village. Some say that the word Tenganan was derived from the word "tengah" or "ngatengahang" which means "move to the inner area". This derivation of word was having a relation with the movement of the villagers from the seaside to a rural area, in which the position of this village is in the middle of hills, that are western hill (Bukit Kauh) and eastern hill (Bukit Kangin).

Another version reveals that the people of Tenganan came from Peneges village, located in Gianyar, precisely near Bedahulu. Based on the folklore, once upon a time Bedahulu King lost one of his horses. The people looked for it to the east and the horse was finally found dead by Ki Patih Tunjung Biru, the King's right hand. For his loyalty, the King finally gave Ki Patih Tunjung Biru an authority to govern the land as far as the aroma of the carrion of the horse can be smelled. Ki Patih was an intelligent person, so he cut the carrion into pieces and spread it as far as he could. Thus he received a quite large area.

The word Pegeringsingan was taken from the word "geringsing". Geringsing is a traditional woven product that can only be found in Tenganan. Geringsing is noticed to be sacred for the belief that it has a magical power to drive away the evil or the black magic. Geringsing derived from the word "gering" means decease and "sing" means no.

Location:
Tenganan Pegeringsingan is situated at Manggis district, approximately 65 km from Denpasar (the International Airport of Bali). It is near Candidasa and can be easily reached by public or private vehicles.

Facility:
Visitors will feel comfortable when visiting this area, for some facilities are available here, like food stalls, good toilets, arts shops and a quite large parking area. If we wish to have meal in restaurants or to spend the night near this area, we can go to Candidasa, which is only 3 km from this village.

Description:
As an ancient village, Tenganan Pegeringsingan is identical with religious activities. Many temple festivals performed in this village that attract visitors to come. The most famous one is "Mekare-kare" or "Perang Pandan". This is a ceremonial fight or war using thorny pandanous leaves as the weapon. This festival usually takes place in relation to the celebration of "Sasih Kelima" or the fifth Balinese month. Many other uniqueness of custom and culture can be found here that make Tenganan worth to visit.

PUTUNG - KARANGASEM

History:
Based on the story downed from generation to generation, the name of Putung was taken from the name of an isolated area, which was once visited by those who wished to hold meditation to get descendant or to be blessed with other blessings.

Artist from Karangasem

1. Pancardawa, Kelurahan Pendem.

2. Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Pidada

Jenis Karya Seni : Seni Sastra
Alamat : Griya Pidada, Sidemen, Karangasem.

3. Ida Pedanda Gede Wayan Pesuruan

Jenis Karya Seni : Seniman Undagi
Alamat : Ds.Sibetan, Bebandem, Karangasem.

4. Ida Pedanda Istri Mas

Karya Agung Tri Bhuana, Candi Narmada,
Panca Wali Krama Ring Danu,
dan Bhatara Turun Kabeh tahun 1993.
Jenis Karya Seni : Seni Undagi
Alamat : Budakeling, Bebandem, Karangasem.

5. Ida Wayan Padang

A Glimpse of Karangasem

The regency of Karangasem is one of the nine regency in Bali, situated in the eastern part of Bali, covering an area of 839,54 sq. kilometers. The dynasty claims descent from the last Mahapajit Governor of Bali at the time of the collapse of that Empire. The state became powerful during the late seventeenth century, conquering the neighbouring Lombok and establishing several principalities on that island. During the last years of the next century, Gusti Gede Ngurah Karangasem [Devata Tohpati], extended control over Buleleng.
The state was conquered by the Raja of Mataram, a collateral relative in 1839. The next ruler, Gusti Gedé Ngurah Made Karangasem, accepted Dutch sovereignty over his realm in 1841, but later repudiated this, along with the other Balinese Rajas. Karangasem and Buleleng suffered completed defeat at Dutch hands during the Lombok War in 1849. The Dutch then annexed the state to the Ratu Agung of Salaparang, their ally. He appointed two of his nephews as successive Regents of Karangasem. After the defeat and extinction of Salaparang in 1893, the Dutch re-established the Karangasem principality under the ruler of the late Regent's family. However, full self-rule did not follow until 1938. The principality acceded to the Indonesian Republic in 1950, but the Raja continued to reign as nominal Raja until his death in 1991. His younger brother succeeded him as Head of the Royal House, but his installation, according to traditional custom, did not follow.

About Mount Agung

Mount Agung or Gunung Agung is a mountain in Bali. This stratovolcano is the highest point on the island. It dominates the surrounding area influencing the climate. The clouds come from the west and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green and the east dry and barren.

Gunung Agung last erupted in 1963-64 and is still active, with a large and very deep crater which occasionally belches smoke and ash. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical, despite the existence of the large crater.

From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the peak of Gunung Rinjani on the island of Lombok, although both mountains are frequently covered in cloud.

The 1963-64 Eruption
The lava flows missed, sometimes by mere yards, the Mother Temple of Besakih. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected. However, over 1,000 people were killed and a number of villages were destroyed in this eruption.

Climbing the Mountain
There are two routes up the mountain, one from Besakih which proceeds to a higher peak and starts at approximately 1100metres and another which commences higher from Pura Pasar Agung, on the southern slope of the mountain, near Selat and which is reputed to take 4 hours. There is no path between the two routes at the top. Cecilie Scott provides an account of the ascent from Pura Pasar Agung. The mountain can be seen from various directions in video, there is a well produced video of the climb from Pura Pasar Agung and a short video from the top above Besakih. Greg Slayden describes a climb from Besakih claimed to have taken a remarkable four and a half hours to the peak and Ken Taylor describes a climb that took much longer and which included getting lost.

Guides are available in Besakih and the mountain can also be climbed without a guide. The climb from Besakih is quite tough. It is sometimes tackled as a single climb generally starting about 10.00pm for a dawn arrival at the peak and sometimes with an overnight camp about three quarters of the way up. It is far harder than the more popular Balinese climb up Gunung Batur. It is not a mountain that needs ropes and not quite high enough for altitude sickness but adverse weather conditions develop quickly and warm waterproof clothing is required and should be carried. There is no water available along the route.

Proceed through the temple complex then continue on a path that travels continuously upwards on a steep narrow spur through open forest and jungle most of the way. There is little potential to get lost until the route opens up towards the top where the correct route doubles backwards. Many climbers miss this turn and continue up a small valley which can be climbed out of with some difficulty.

Bali History

Bali is an Indonesian island located at 8°25′23″S, 115°14′55″ECoordinates: 8°25′23″S, 115°14′55″E, the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island. The island is home to the vast majority of Indonesia's small Hindu minority. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music.

Bali has been inhabited since early prehistoric times firstly by descendants of a prehistoric race who migrated through mainland Asia to the Indonesian archipelago, thought to have first settled in Bali around 3000 BC.[citation needed] Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island's west.

Balinese culture was strongly influenced by Indian, and particularly Sanskrit, culture, in a process beginning around the 1st century AD. The name Balidwipa has been discovered from various inscriptions, including the Blanjong charter issued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa in 913 AD and mentioning Walidwipa. It was during this time that the complex irrigation system subak was developed to grow rice. Some religious and cultural traditions still in existence today can be traced back to this period. The Hindu Majapahit Empire (1293–1520 AD) on eastern Java founded a Balinese colony in 1343. When the empire declined, there was an exodus of intellectuals, artists, priests and musicians from Java to Bali in the 15th century.

The First European contact with Bali is thought to have been when Dutch explorer Cornelis de Houtman arrived in 1597, though a Portuguese ship had foundered off the Bukit Peninsula as early as 1585.[citation needed] Dutch rule over Bali came later, was more aggressively fought for, and they were never ultimately able to establish themselves as they had in other parts of Indonesia such as Java and Maluku.

In the 1840s, a presence in Bali was established, first in the island's north, by playing various distrustful Balinese realms against each other. The Dutch mounted large naval and ground assaults first against the Sanur region and then Denpasar. The Balinese were hopelessly overwhelmed in number and armament, but rather than face the humiliation of surrender, they mounted a final defensive but suicidal assault, or puputan. Despite Dutch demands for surrender, an estimated 4,000 Balinese marched to their death against the invaders. Afterwards the Dutch governors were able to exercise little influence over the island, and local control over religion and culture generally remained intact.

Japan occupied Bali during World War II during which time a Balinese military officer, Gusti Ngurah Rai, formed a Balinese 'freedom army'. Following Japan's Pacific surrender in August 1945, the Dutch promptly returned to Indonesia, including Bali, immediately to reinstate their pre-war colonial administration. This was resisted by the Balinese rebels now using Japanese weapons.

On 20 November 1946, the Battle of Marga was fought in Tabanan in central Bali. Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, 29 years old, finally rallied his forces in east Bali at Marga Rana, where they made a suicide attack on the heavily armed Dutch. The Balinese battalion was entirely wiped out, breaking the last thread of Balinese military resistance. In 1946 the Dutch constituted Bali as one of the 13 administrative districts of the newly-proclaimed Republic of East Indonesia, a rival state to the Republic of Indonesia which was proclaimed and headed by Sukarno and Hatta. Bali was included in the ‘’Republic of the United States of Indonesia’’ when the Netherlands recognised Indonesian independence on Dec. 29, 1949. In 1950 Bali officially renounced the Dutch union and legally became a province within the Republic of Indonesia.
The 1963 eruption of Mount Agung killed thousands, created economic havoc and forced many displaced Balinese to be transmigrated to other parts of Indonesia.

In 1965, after a failed coup d'etat in Jakarta against the national government of Indonesia, Bali, along with other regions of Indonesia most notably Java, was the scene of widespread killings of (often falsely-accused) members and sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) by right-wing General Soeharto-sponsored militias. Possibly more than 100,000 Balinese were killed although the exact numbers are unknown to date and the events remain legally undisclosed.[2] Many unmarked but well known mass graves of victims are located around the island[citation needed].

On October 12, 2002, a car bomb attack in the tourist resort of Kuta killed 202 people, largely foreign tourists and injured a further 209. Further bombings occurred three years later in Kuta and nearby Jimbaran Bay.
